MEDAN, N SUMATERA – The Philology Faculty’s Ethnomusicology Studies Program of North Sumatra University (USU) denied that 50% of its students failed to get a degree. The rebuttal was related to a reportage mentioning about 50% of Ethnomusicology were failed to achieve the university’s degree.

Chairman of the Department of Ethnomusicology, Frida Deliana, said that what Setia Darmawan delivered in his paper is not entirely true, because not supported by valid data. She also attached the data of students’ graduation rate of in the last four classes. For the class of 2001, from 16 active students, as much as 75 percent or 12 people managed to reach the bachelor degree. As for the class of 2002, as many as 19 people or 86 percent successfully completed their studies and graduated.

“Meanwhile for the class of 2003, from 25 active students, 14 people have successfully graduated and 8 more are still finishing their final papers,” she said here Tuesday (Nov.23).

For the class of 2004, from 28 active students two people have already graduated and the rest are on their final paper completion. “So we delivered this rebuttal in accordance to the meeting result of the Ethnomusicology lecturers which attended by eight people including Setia Dermawan Purba,” she said.

The source of the reportage was initially quoted from one of the Ethnomusicology’s lecturers Setia Darmawan Purba’s paper which delivered at the Three Decade of USU’s Department of Ethnomusicology International seminar on Saturday (Nov.21). Setia said that in each year about 40 people pass the university national admission test, but only 30 people who re-sign and enrolled in the skill test.

“Time after time, they who could finish the studies or graduated rarely reach over 50%,” he said.
